The Evolution of the Netflix Logo

The Evolution of the Netflix Logo

History

Everybody nowadays will know Netflix for their very popular “Video On Demand” streaming services of the same name for Movies and TV shows.

But before they introduce the streaming concept, Netflix first started off as a Movie and TV Show Rental Service since it’s beginnings in 1997.

Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph two software engineers who previously worked at Full Software, created a company based on two ideas they got from their experiences.

Randolph who had an interest in the internet wanted to start an internet business but didn’t know what type of product to sell and Hastings who saw how retailers were charging people for renting movies, was disgusted by their practices and wanted to make renting more consumer friendly.

These two interests Randolph and Hastings had, lead them to the finding/creation of Netflix as a monthly movie rental service where people could go online (started off with traditional mailing before the popularity of email) and rent movies or tv shows with good rental fees and Netflix would send the movies directly to the consumers by mail.

They kept the business model from 1999 till 2007 when they dropped the business model in favor of streaming films and tv shows. Netflix would introduce their “Video on Demand” streaming service using their brand name for on-demand streaming services and became one of the most successful Videos on Demand out there.

Marc Randolph was the first CEO of Netflix since it’s findings in 1997 until 2004 when he left the company. Reed Hastings took over as the CEO from 2004 and still holding the title to this day.

The Logo

The First Design

The very first logo Netflix’s had when they started off was a very generic black text logo with the title Netflix.com with the Netflix logo split into “Net” and “Flix” with a circle spiral in the shape of a film reel.

Looking at the logo, it’s clear the logo wasn’t a good representation of their company and meaning is besides being movie/TV show Rental Company. The logo is just simple black text with the word split in half to try making it appealing for those who can recognize it, the company and its meaning. The only thing that can show the company’s meaning is the film reel but even that isn’t enough

They kept the first logo design from 1997 up until 2000 when they redesigned the logo into one of the most iconic designs that people will know and remember.

The Second Design

Netflix’s Second Logo is one of the most iconic designs that people will be familiar with during its time in the 2000s and the first half of 2010s.

The Netflix Second Logo Design has a red background and a white font and black stroke with the font. The font design in the Netflix logo appears to be “Graphique” as the logo has a thick design on the right side of the text/letters giving it a 3D look to make it stand out.

Graphique Font

The bottom of the logo has a semi-circle curve as the N and X are longer but the text becomes a bit shorter until it reaches the middle letter F. The idea for the curve could have been taken the previous logo where the curved used for the film reel to split the Netflix word.

The Second Logo Design was used from 2000 up until 2014 when Netflix made another redesign to the logo.

The Thrid Logo Design

Netflix’s Third Logo is the current logo being used for the company which was created in 2014 and has been used to this day.

The Thrid Logo looks to be the same as the Second Logo Design but does have differences when the two are compared.

The Thrid Logo drops the White and Black “Graphique” font and went for a different font and used it’s trademark red color as the Font’s color. With that color, the red background was dropped in favor of a white and/or transparent background. But the semi-circle curve on the bottom was still kept for the next logo.

Alongside the Thrid Logo, there is another logo made to recognize the brand easier. The Logo is simply a letter N with the same font style, color, and curve on the bottom One thing about the N is that the letter has a fold or ribbon design to the N.

Four Vectors of Branding

Product

Netflix first started off as a DVD rental business as they’re original aim was to allow people who subscribed to their service, rent out as many DVDs on how many days for a fair price/fee and delivered to their door quickly.

But now Netflix is known for its “Video on Demand” service that allows people who subscribed to the service, can have access to a large library of films and TV shows and watch many as possible for a price/fee monthly.

Behaviour

Netflix is pretty much an online service type company since Netflix’s “Video on Demand” service operates online and they need run on that format to do their business.

So for their behavior on how they approach selling, they’re product, they use the internet to do their business and so they’re behavior is pretty tech-savvy. They use smart words and pictures/graphic design in their advertisements to try to convince people that their product is good for them.

Environment

Netflix is technical since they use the internet for the business. But like any multinational company, they do have an environment where every looks, modern, smart, straightforward and overly a real headquarters for anyone within this line of the area to work.

Communication

Communication is pretty much the business type as you can only email or call Netflix through their communication department as they handle the calls or text and talk to their higher-ups before communicating back to their consumers.

Corporate

Netflix is pretty much a corporate brand since they have one product with their brand name on it and that I used to represent what the company is and they’re purpose.

The CEO

The current CEO of Netflix is Wilmot Reed Hastings, Jr. or Redd Hasting as he is known as. Redd Hasting one of the co-founders of Netflix, is a businessman who knows a lot about business and technology. His knowledge of these helped him and his co-founder, Marc Randolph, to form the company and their ideas for the company’s direction and future. Starting from DVD rental Service Company to a digital on demand service in today’s time.

Core Ideas

Ideas of Netflix is about bringing film and TV shows to its consumers in a very quick, easy, straightforward and smart way. By having consumers subscribe to a subscription service and choose a DVD of their choose for a fee, this idea helped pave the way for Netflix to evolved into one of the most successful, and iconic companies for renting films easily.

And when they created the digital on-demand service, it made Netflix a household name for home film and tv entertainment.
